Southern Butter Rolls

Total Time: 2 hrs 30 mins Preparation Time: 30 mins Cook Time: 2 hrs

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Recipe

  • 1 mix together flour, sugar, salt and instant yeast.
  • 2 mix in shortening.
  • 3 mix in water.
  • 4 turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 20 minutes.
  • 5 cover dough with vegetable oil, cover and let rise for one hour.
  • 6 form 24 smooth round rolls and place in greased 13x9" baking pan.
  • 7 let rise again for 45 minutes.
  • 8 bake at 400 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes.
